Butterball 2018

First off you may be asking yourself, "What in the world is Butterball 2018?"  The answer to that question is a complicated one.  It isn't easily answered, it is only experienced.  I will do my best to give you a quick rundown.  It is a combination, golf and poker tournament, family/friend reunion, and guys weekend all rolled into one.

There was some serious discussion about the origins of Butterball, from what I can gather it began as a family get together and boat outing back in the 80's.  Slowly it morphed into what it is today...a mixture of Butterball bylaws and kind of make it up.  Two team captains choose their golf teams for a scramble.  The winning captain is crowned Butterball champ.  He receives the trophy and the coveted Blue Jacket.   Their names are forever enshrined on the jacket.

The second part is the Texas Hold-em tournament.  The winner receives the poker golf club cover and the champions cup...along with the pot.  Then there are the ceremonial videos...that's my father-in-laws forte.

I received the text on the invitation-only group text chain.  The date had been set, April 26, 2018.  I requested my day off, made sub plans, packed the van and set our course...Pickwick here we come!

Almost made it to Dyersburg before our first stop.

Very nice and very clean!  Camden said it smelled like a swimming pool.

Time for a quick refueling...

 DOLLAR MENU!

At approximately 8:30 PM we arrived at the "cabin."  It was very nice and could sleep up to 14, I think is what they said.

NOT TOO BAD!!!

After unpacking we all just hung out and visited.  We caught up on a year's worth of stories and contemplated the complexities of the universe (no lie...).  Off to bed at 1:00 AM, we got to golf tomorrow.

I am not a golfer and I am not that great...bad in fact.  There are some very good golfers and some that are pretty good and let's face it...I am bad.  It was fun to get out and play with Camden.  We had some good bonding and hanging out time.  With two in a cart we hung out all day long.  On Friday we had lots of time to let the boys get out and play with us.

Camden improved a lot during our trip

18 Holes...DONE!

After golfing a few of us went to a local Mexican restaurant.  I had enchiladas of course and an insane about of chips and salsa.  The enchiladas were really good.  Not quite as good as El Torero here at home. (I didn't think about taking any pictures there...I was starving and wore out).

Back to the cabin to chill for a bit, then a game of poker.  This wasn't the big tournament game, the reigning champ hadn't shown up yet to defend his title.  It was a pretty good game for me.  I kept catching cards.  My pile 'o chips kept getting larger and larger.

I did get caught taking this picture and they thought I must have had a really good hand if I was taking a picture of it.  Made for a good bluff, so I ran with it.  I won that night...$40 pot!

I showered in this beauty...it has the rain fall showerhead up top and jets that shoot out from the side.  BEDTIME!

After some sweet breakfast, it's off to the course again!

I was team captain along with David.  We chose teams and we were off to play.  It was BEAUTIFUL weather and the course was packed.  The little kids didn't get to play the whole time like they did yesterday, but they got to hit quite a bit while we waited for the teams in front of us.

He wanted to drive so bad

Scooter trashed him

Snuck in a little cart driving

After 18 holes...we lost.  David was going to have to leave, so we went back to the cabin for the winner's ceremony.  It was a whole production.

Congrats David...it took 4 years to win!

The winning team

My team was not so lucky.

A sad day for me and my lineage.

After the festivities, we were off to eat at Ricky T's.

I got some fish tacos...pretty dang good!

They were down at the end of the table cackling about something.

Back to the cabin to chill.

Poker Tournament...I didn't last quite as long on this one.  All I ever got were 3's, 4's, 8's and 9's.  I lost my chips about an hour and a half in and did not want to buy back in.  I went to bed and let them keep playing.

Josh took it!

Woke up, ate breakfast, settled up on the bill and 4 hours home!

It was a great weekend.  A little stressful getting everything squared away to get there and a long drive, but it was great to see family.  I really enjoyed spending quality time with Camden.  We don't get to do too much stuff like this together so it was fun to hang!  Looking forward to Butterball 2019.

A special thanks to Josh Holley @ Josh Holley Realty:  A Tradition of Trust; for organizing Butterball.  I know everyone gives you a hard time, but it wouldn't happen if you didn't do it!

It's a long story, but there were no fish in the sink.  For the record!
